IT'S WHEELY WEDNESDAY AND SOME ADVICE

About 2 months before
our Grandpa passed away,
he gave Mom his old pickup.
We are going to be taking
you around in it today
since we will be leaving the farm.
(Our Polaris can only be used off-road)
Dad is our driver
and Java is the tour director.
Please jump in behind Java.
Off we go!!

Since Virginia is over 400 years old,
(and we know that's young to you folks across the pond.)
today we are taking you to see
some historic spots in our county.
But first we'll stop at the
Sylvatus Ruritan Club Flea Market.
You've heard us talk so much about it
that you deserve to see it.

Since we're so close to Wythe County,
we decided to show you the
Shot Tower.
It was built over 150 years ago
to make ammunition for the firearms
of the early settlers.
Next we travel back to Carroll County
to see the
Sinda Allen House.
The Allen Family
were involved in the
shooting at the Carroll County Courthouse.
The event that took this story
off of the front page of the
New York Times
was the sinking of the Titanic!!

Now we are traveling down
Main Street in Hillsville.
(don't blink or you'll miss it!!)
The Hillsville Diner is one of the
last of the original
street car diners.
Mom and Dad go there on
Saturday mornings for the pancakes.
Dad graduated from high school
with the owner, Mac.

Up the street
from the Diner
is the
Historic Carroll County Courthouse.
It now houses the County Museum.

Next to the Courthouse
is the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter House.
When Mom was growing up,
it housed county offices.
Now it is in the process of
being restored to it's
original grandeur.
And now a warning and some advice - Last night Mom walked us up the road. It was rainy and Carrleigh decided to sit down in a mud puddle. Mom brought her back to the house and bathed her. When Mom was drying Carrleigh, she thought Carr had a sore on her back, but it was a red tick. Luckily it hadn't embedded itself yet!! (Mom is scratching as she types this.)

This morning we got an email from a friend who works at the Twin County Humane Society with this bit of advice. For easy tick removal -- apply a 'glob' of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20). The tick will come out and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. Mom had heard this method before but we have never had to try it. Have you ever used it?

Have a Wonderful Wheely Wednesday,
XOXO
Lilly, Piper, Carrleigh and Java

PS - for all of our feline friends - we have just been made aware of a cat food recall. It is for a Nutro Product - please consult the website for further information.

Hello there!

Thank you for the lovely tour around Virginia county. We really enjoyed reading about the various places.

Thank you too for the bit of advice on how to remove ticks. The CHief does it the 'icky way' - which is why she fumigates us lot with vigour! Not sure if that's very healthy ...

Nice tour! What a pretty place to live.
Mom hates ticks too, but she just picks them off, I think i will have her try that next time Scampi gets one. (me, I never had had one, they can't find my skin through all of the fur)

Hey, thanks for the history tour. Such fine buildings. I both love seeing photos of where my dog pals live, all over the world.
As for ticks, yes we have them here in Scotland too! In fact we seem to have some super tough Frontline-resistant ticks, and when one settles on me, Gail and I play a little game - she tries to sneak up on me, hiding tweezers in her hand, and I try to guess what she's about, and snap at her before she gets too close. I usually win! Funny, I don't mind the ticks, but they sure seem to upset my owner.
Cheers! H.

Dogness! Do you see how long we've been gone? We've missed you so much.... but we are happy to come back and take a tour with you of bits of Virginia. We love history and local stomping grounds. Now, we have a question.... do you get pancakes for Saturday breakfast, too? Do the humans bring home a doggie bag? We hope so! We are making that strong recommendation.

Onward to your more recent blogs,
Jake and Fergi
