"SPIT AND POLISH"

On Monday afternoon,
we saw Mom get out this little basket.

It was just the perfect size to hold our
"Eight Sweet Babes".

She put them in the truck
and she and Carrleigh
took them to the Vet
to have their dewclaws removed.

Our Mom is so scared
that a dog will get a dewclaw hung on something
and pull it off
so she does this to make it easier
for the puppies in the future.
It is totally accepted in
the breed standard.

But dewclaw removal is not the only work
they get on their feet/nails.

Many of you have commented on
the puppy's pawdicures.
On the day,
they are born,
they get painted toenails
so that they can be identified.

As the puppies are born,
Mom notates the time of birth,
the sex of the pup
and any outstanding markings
it might have.

When the second pup comes,
Mom gives it to Carrleigh
and while Carrleigh is cleaning it up,
Mom paints the right front toenails
on the first pup.

In this case,
the right front female is Jazzi
and the right front male is Jock.

Then the next puppy gets
its left front toenails painted
and
they go down the line
to right rear and left rear.

When she runs out of toenails to paint,
the next dog is left "blank".
She hasn't figured out how
she will mark them
if there are ever more than five
of the same sex!

Wearing makeup seems to run
in this clan's family.

We just received a picture of their big sister,
Finleigh of Signy's Cottage

and

SHE'S WEARING LIPSTICK!!

It seems,
whilst her Mom was busy,
she got into her Mom's purse
and tried out her lipstick.

As you can see from the picture,
she did a great job
of getting it applied evenly.
(Becky Bluebonnet, are you reading this?)

Their big brother,
Bailey Sweet,
says he'd rather take a bath
than wear makeup - BOL!!

They don't know it yet,
but today will be the first time
they get their nails clipped.

XOXO

Another aaaaawwww moment on a crummy day--THANKS for that!!!

I knew what the polish was for, and didn't know if you would go to another color or just have two sets of nails painted. The Goldens keep their dew claws, but I have had a couple of fosters that had rear dew claws that were removed for the same reasons.

Glad all went well in their first adventure into the big world!

How PRECIOUS!!!!!!

I can't imagine how precise you have to be to paint those tiny toenails! I usually paint Bunny's outside if I do it, and that works well because she's really patient, but squirming puppies must require a lot more talent!

Samba had her dewclaws when she came to us and when she was three years old she tore both of them. It was terribly painful. She had to wear boots for a while, then had them removed surgically. It was a major operation at that age and a painful recovery. When the pups came along, they had theirs removed on day four. One problem solved!

Great plan with the nail polish. If you get more than five males or females, she will just have to switch to a new color:)

Finleigh just really wants to be a lady. After all, a lady never goes anywhere without her lipstick:)

They are just sooooo cute. Good for you for having the dewclaws removed. It's been a problem for Maggie as you know.

We were wondering about the marking system. We remember the nail polish.....interesting.

Bella is the only one without dewclaws and she doesn't have to suffer having them clipped!

They are such beautiful babies. Won't be long before that basket won't hold them.

Gosh, they're so precious! When they grow up, they won't remember a thing that their dewclaws were removed when they were still very small. It's always best to do it now at this very young age than later because then it would be considered as an amputation & it would cause much more stress & pain to the dog. I love their teenie tiny painted toenails. Very cute! My hoomies Melissa never marked any of my puppies so till today, they still don't know which puppy was which. BOL! Silly hoomies.
