I have been nagging Mom all day
to tell about the color of Labs.
And Lilly has rolled her eyes
a countless number of times
as only a Scottie can do.
Lilly says that everyone knows that
Labs only come in three colors,
black, yellow and chocolate.
But I say Lilly is just being stubborn -
I need to get the word out
about my breed too!!
But something happened tonight
that made Lilly give in.
The Lovely Miss Fergi,
who Lilly admires like no other
and Sir Jake, who Piper tries to emulate,
said that they thought that
I should have equal time
to tell about the color
of
Labrador Retrievers.
So here goes......
I, Spencer's Java Bean,
am a Chocolate Labrador Retriever.
There was a time in our history
when some breeders would kill
any Chocolate Labs that were born
because they were deemed undesirable.
Only Black Labs and
Yellow Labs
were allowed to compete for titles.
Now they are all allowed to compete
for any title, regardless of color.
Dexter, aka PeeWee,
is a Black Labrador Retriever.
And so is Buddy.
Zack and Sassy are
Yellow Labrador Retrievers.
Many people want to call
Yellow Labs
by the wrong name.
They want to call them
Golden Labrador Retrievers.
There are no
Golden Labrador Retrievers.
Only Golden Retrievers
like the beautiful
Miss Sammie
and
the lovely
Miss Sierra Rose.
Some breeders are trying
to develop a Silver Lab -
Mom was very interested in this
at one time
and planned on trying to purchase a silver mate for me,
but our doctor
"put the kabosh" on that idea.
Silver Labs are not recognized
at this time by AKC.
(She started saving her nickels
to purchase the dog and because
of this was going to name her Nickel)
The Labrador did not come from Labrador,
but from Newfoundland.
Labrador Retrievers are marvelous
guide dogs and can be trained easily.
They make wonderful hunting companions
and household pets.
At the end of 2008,
they have been
the top AKC registered dog
for the past 18 years.
Guess that shows those pesky Scotties
whose the boss,
doesn't it?
XOXO

Great post, Java! My bestest friend, Gus, is an award winning black lab. He's a duck hunter! My cousin, Goose, is a chocolate lab. I love labs very much!!
Love,
Janie
Hi Java, it was goods reading about you and your colours. Mums has a soft spot for Chocolate Labs.
Hi Java-Bean,
I love your pretty choclatey coat, and I'm appalled anyone would want to dispatch a sweet lab on the basis of their coat color. How rude! I never heard of a silver lab....must go google diving later.
Oh yeah, we know all about those eager to please suck up labs. They give all us independent minded Scotties a bad name in the obedience world. That's why there are soooo many of them and not so many Scotties. Seems peeps just don't want swift warrior Scotties that can think fast on their feetsies without checking with their peeps as to what to do. I mean, when there is something that needs killing quick, you can't just do 'watch me' to yer peep to see if it's ok. Yah gots to go for the juggler on the spot. When you're 10 feet down a badger tunnel, you can't wait for a sit/stay command to come down the tube, you hafta decide to retreat or stay n play on yer own. And we certainly don't ask permission to chase squirrels...nope...it's against our nature.
sniffies all around,
Bonnie the Incorrigible
NOW we're happy! We got to enjoy reading about YOUR beautiful breed. (We're glad Lilly gave in.) We can imagine you've got your work cut out for you, being the only lab in a household of terriers. Lucky you're a chocolate lab. Everybody loves chocolate and will do most anything for it. Right?
Now...speaking of java.... it's that time of the day.
Love,
Jake and Fergi xxoo
Thank you for all that info on labs - we think we like the chocolate flavor the best. Some of the little grandbipeds here have a black licorice one Gypsy Girl.
Woos, the OP Pack
Way to get equal time Jave!! THose were great pictures of beautiful Labs =) Thank you for the information. The momma didn't realize that silvers were not recognized.
Lilo
Gosh, you suuure know your colors!
We just know the primary colors cuz we like to chew on crayons. Well, we like to but we don't. The woman who owns us, won't let us!
Luv,
Riley and Star.
Go Java, thats telling them!! We love Chocolate Labs!!! WE really love all colors of Labs! But chocolate the best!! You are a beautiful Lab!!! You look so sweet!
It is O K to look sweet Java!!!
Bambi and Happy send their love,
Fern
Your breed is just as important as the Scottie breed, Java, and we just happen to think that the Chocolate Lab is beautiful and very desirable!
Love ya lots
Maggie and Mitch
Ha! I would have used the photo of Pee-Wee's bottom.
How sad that chocolate labs used to be considered inferior. You are clearly a smart dog. You can drive the wheelie.
Slobbers,
Mango
OhhhhhH!!! GREAT POST!! Thanks for making Sammie and I, NOT sideways!!
Big love for all our furrie pals!
We have mostly chocolabs in mom's family, and one chocolate, who is a recessive gene, and came out blond!!!
Thanks for inculding us!
Hugs and snaggle-tooth kisses,
Sierra Rose
Thanks for the info Java! Never heard of a silver lab, but have seen Sierra's blond Chocolate lab - very pretty!
Huggers (and thanks for mentioning me and Sierra!) XO Sammie
Well pawed Java!
Tank woo fur sharing!
Hugz&Khysses,
Khyra
If you nibble your toes are they made of chocolate??that would be fabulous..We think you are all quite handsome.....As for going to a show and changing their grooming habits? Yep happens every year..they buy the latest torture devices..... WHAT IS WITH ALL OF THEM??? Love A+A
Hay Java-
Way to push for equal rights with the Scotties! This is your very distantly relted brother Mason, and I think your post was just the best! I think it's good that the AKC is putting the kabosh on silver labs - they's just look like fuzzy Weimeraners!!
Slobbery kisses-
Mason (Brutus's brother)
My cousin Tango is a chocolate lab (although I think she's got auburn highlights, if you ask me), and I can't imagine her being in any inferior! (And Mango has a good point - you can drive the wheelie thing, which automatically makes you superior!)
*kissey face*

Seth knows someone who got a silver lab... I guess it was the biggest pain!
Java, you and your friends are so pretty!! Thanks for sharing all that info on your great breed! My dear Judy was a lab mix.
xo martine
I looked all over for a chocolate Lab a few years ago and there were none available in our area. Instead Tsar came to live with us. His dad was a lab, so I got part of my wish.
