FEEDING TIME AT ROCKY CREEK FARM

GROWING OUT OF OUR HOME

All of the puppies
thought they were fairly comfy
in the whelping box.
Dinner was delivered
right on schedule.

They could snuggle
up and sleep together.

All of the puppies
weigh within 2 ounces
of each other.
And all of their eyes are open.
This is Henry.

Can you remember
when Mom made their picture on
Valentines Day?
Look how much they
have grown since then -
This is the same basket
they were in then.

This morning Mom heard a big commotion
in the whelping box.
When she checked,
eight of the puppies had climbed out.
So it was time for some
changes to be made.

Now they all have new collars
blue for boys
and
pink for girls.
And they have moved into larger quarters.
Hopefully this puppy box
will contain them for a few weeks.

Aunt Lilly
came in for a visit.
Hamish needed to share a
little secret with her.

And now their Dad
can help look over them.

AHHH! - SWEET PUPPY BREATH

Sophie

Many of you have made the comment
that you love the aroma of puppy breath.
If one could bottle that scent,
they would make millions.

But some Scotties have another aroma
that is on the same level with
sweet puppy breath.
They have a scent
on the top of their head
between their ears,
that is known as
"The Heather Scent".

Mom and Dad had smelled it
on Carrleigh and on Lilly's puppies,
but just thought it was something
they had rubbed against.

But when Mom and Dad first joined
The Scottish Terrier Club of Western Virgina,
one of the founding members
asked if any of their Scotties
had the heather scent.

All at once they knew where this delightful
aroma came from.
They all don't have it
and if they do it's not all the time,
but newborn Scotties seem to exude it.
Carrleigh has it fairly strongly
and occasionally you can smell it on Lilly,
but never on Piper.

If you have a Scottie,
rub it's head and take a whiff.
You might get rewarded
with this sweet aroma.

THERE'S NOTHING QUITE AS SWEET AS PUPPIES IN THE MORNING

First, Aunt Lilly
has to jump in the puppy basket
to warm it up for the babies.

The puppies are still sleeping in
the whelping box
so Mom has to look and see
what a big mess they have made.

Then they go into the
pre-warmed basket to wait
to be weighed.

Here's Ciara on the scales -
of course we would never tell
a ladies weight.

And all of the items it takes to keep us
healthy and clean -
plenty of clean, fresh sheets
nail clippers,
finger nail polish (to identify us)
our comb (if we get poops stuck in our fur)
our worming medicine
(today was the first of 4 wormings
we will receive before we can go
to our forever homes)
Our weigh chart -
we get weighed twice a day,
but it is only recorded in the morning
and
the items it takes
to keep our room smelling fresh.
Of course there are dozens of
other things,
but we won't bore you with the details.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

MISS SNICKERS LEADS THE PACK

Last night when we changed the puppies linens
before we went to bed,
we noticed that Miss Snickers
had one eye starting to open.

Henry had found his paw

Jazzi and Angus
just wanted to be cuties

Upon getting back in to bed,
they hugged each other up

And were content

and sleepy.

Ahh!! sweet puppies

PLEASE BEAR WITH US AS WE POST THIS PUPDATE

Dad has updated our computer
and now we have Photoshop
instead of Microsoft Photo
so Mom is having a bit of a time
getting used to it.
If you have any hints,
she'd be happy for you
to share them with her.

She did manage
to get a few puppy pictures
edited and uploaded.

A sweet sleeping Hamish.

Dinnertime.

Finlay napping.

And a dear puppy pile.

Now we're off to change their linens
and get the laundry going.
They use between 6 and 9 sheets
per day and a countless number
of washcloths.
And they will only be 2 weeks old tomorrow.
We can't imagine how many they
will go through at 6 weeks old.

RUN FREE, DEAR POPPY

It is with much sadness
that we learned that our dear
airegirlfuriend, Poppy,
had to go to the Rainbow Bridge.
Our thoughts and prayers are with
Lana and Penny and Patches.

We also received an email
that Caesar Milan's
much beloved dog, Daddy
had to leave us too.
He was a great ambassador
for the Pit-Bull community
and was 16 years old.

On a lighter note,
we leave you with a sweet sleeping Henry.
Check out that precious puppy paw.
If we only had smellovision,
you could smell that sweet puppy breath.

RUN FREE, DEAR HAMISH

It is with much sadness,
that we read the post from Gail this morning
telling us that dear Hamish
had gone to the Rainbow Bridge.

We will not only miss him,
but will miss the strolls he took us on
around his hometown of Aberdeen.
He was a fun-loving soul.

He was a fine chap,
who enjoyed a wee dram.

and was very educated
and gave us much food for thought.

We hope his dear little namesake
can grow into the gentle dog
that Hamish was.

He will be sorely missed.

THE COLORS OF WHEATEN

Some of you have asked
if all of the puppies are Wheatens
and if they will change colors.
To answer that question,
yes they are all
Wheaten Scottish Terriers
and they will darken some as their
adult coat comes in.

Piper,
who is the sire of these puppies,
is a very red Wheaten.
It's hard to tell in his pictures,
just how dark he is.
The darkest part of their fur
is the part that is next to the skin.
After seeing Sadie's great grooming,
we see that we have a long way to go.
If Mom stripped us more,
Piper would be very red.

This shows the difference
of Piper and Carrleigh.
Piper is the one in the swimming pool
and Carrleigh is thinking about jumping in.

In the snow,
it's easier to see the difference.
Carrleigh is more the color of a toasted marshmallow
and Piper is more of a strawberry blond.

The puppies are three Wheaten shades.
There are 2 light ones,
3 dark ones
and 4 who are in between.

The darkest ones now
are about the color of peanut butter,
which is very dark for a Wheaten Scottie
and that is the color that Mom finds most desirable.
It depends on the person
as to which color you prefer.
There is no color that is better
than the other according to the judges.

To see about all of the
AKC recognized color of Scotties,
please go to this post.

THANK YOU FOR PLAYING THE NAME GAME

We want to thank all of you
who entered in our
"Name That Puppy" Contest.
There were about 60 entries per sex,
and it was a lot of fun.

Hamish and Angus
were the most popular boy's names.
Fergie was the most popular
for the wee lasses.

The first thing we did was have Mom
type out all of the names
and cut them apart,
attached to the name of the entrant.
She then put them in one of her
Scottie purses
and we got to choose them.

Because Java
is our elder,
he was given the opportunity
to choose first.
As you can see,
he's not really enthusiastic about it.

We know the puppies
haven't changed too much,
according to their pictures,
but they have really grown a lot.
Each puppy has gained
an average of 5 ounces.
And that's a lot when you only
weigh 8 ounces to begin with.

They are wiggly
and very hard to photograph,
so please bear with us.
Cuter pictures of them
will come in a couple of weeks.

Little Laddie #1
is now named
Hamish
as suggested by
Uncle Petey.
Java says,
"us old guys gotta stick together".
This is in honor of our friend, Hamish.

Our male puppy #2
is now named
Angus,
as suggested by Bijou.

Male puppy # 3
is now
going by
Dugan,
as suggested
by
Kira.

Lilly chose next.

Laddie #4
is now named
Finlay,
which was submitted by Stella.

Ladd # 5
is now named
Henry,
submitted by KMP.

Our little girl #6
already has her forever name.
It is
Sophie's Scarlett Sage.

Number 7 was so fast,
we could hardly photograph her.
Her name is now
Jasmine,
submitted by
Snazzi Jazzi.

Lass # 8 is now
Ciara
which was submitted
by NSLM and Clive.

And Piper dug deep
to pull out the last name
and the winner of our contest.

.
.
.
.
.
And the name he chose
.
.
.
.
.

Lassie #9 is now named
Snickers
and was submitted by
Butchy and Snickers blogspot.

Please contact us
at rocky creek scotties at yahoo dot com
to claim your prize.

As their "forever peeps"
start choosing their names,
we will keep you updated.

Once more we want to thank you all
again for participating.
It was a lot of fun!

XOXO,
The Rocky Creek Baker's Dozen
