BLUE RIDGE SUMMER NIGHTS

As we lie in our beds
drifting off to sleep
we hear
the chirp of crickets,
the bawl of a calf that has lost it's mom,
the repetitive call
of the whippoorwill
,
the hooting of a far away owl.

Through the lace curtains on the window,
we see
the sparkle of lightening bugs,
the glow of the moon
and the sky full of stars.
If the moon is full,
the fencepost cast shadows.

Occasionally we catch
the beautiful fragrance of honeysuckle
or new mown hay
wafting on the breeze.
Other times a skunk
walks through our yard
and its smell makes us wrinkle our noses.

We are happy,
we are content,
we are loved.

What a wonderful world.

XOXO,
Lilly, Piper, Carrleigh and Java

  3. Ah, what a beautiful, evocative poem. I can almost feel that I'm right there with you in the Blue Ridge Mountains (and not in chilly, damp Aberdeen).
    Cheers! H.
